GEAR UP
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally
funded, seven-year initiative to prepare limited-income students for post-secondary education.
Michigan's GEAR UP grant, expanded from the College Day program and awarded in the fall of
2020, is executed by 15 public universities to connect communities with higher education
institutions. Operating under a combined cohort-priority model, the University of MichiganAnn Arbor GEAR UP partners with seven metro Detroit middle schools beginning in the 7th
grade and will continue to support these scholars through their first year in post-secondary
education. GEAR UP supports the entire school community, including scholars, families and
educators, by fostering a college-going culture and providing the necessary resources for high
school graduation and post-secondary success.
