WOMEN IN SCIENCE &
ENGINEERING
The University of Michigan’s WISE Girls in Science and Engineering (WISE GISE) summer day
camp started almost 20 years ago as a way to encourage girls' participation in STEM in middle
school, a critical time when participation typically drops off. The 7th and 8th-grade campers
embark on an extraordinary journey of scientific discovery through a week of hands-on STEM
exploration that is as thrilling as it is educational. WISE GISE nurtures a future in STEM for
campers by creating community amongst underrepresented students, working with diverse
role models, building self-efficacy, practicing STEM skills and highlighting the ways scientists
make the world a better place.
