UMSI SUMMER INSTITUTE
Launched in 2017, the School of Information’s Community College Summer Institute (CCSI)
uses a high-touch, participant-centered approach to introduce community college students to
the field of information, as well as experience student life at the University of Michigan.
Developed in consultation with the Center for Educational Outreach, CCSI includes in-depth
exposure to the field of information through faculty-led sessions, college admissions and
professional development support. Notably, the institute also includes assistance with
transportation, housing and a stipend to compensate for lost wages. Since its inception, CCSI
has hosted over 200 community college students, 90 of whom have gone on to attend U-M. All
participants have had transformational experiences and gained a realization that there is a
space for them at U-M.
