SHIAWASSEE SCHOLARS
The Shiawassee Regional Education Service District (RESD) program, funded by the Cook Family
Foundation, has identified high-achieving students in Shiawassee County for the past 25 years. It
supports them with academic counseling, scholarship opportunities, and peer-to-peer support to
help them reach their full potential. The program helps students apply for summer scholarships to
explore an area of interest, develop a level of comfort and acceptance of their intelligence,
recognize academic, personal or social challenges and develop strategies to overcome them, excel
academically, and encourage their application to a distinguished college or university. Each year,
rising 9th-graders attend a three-day trip to the University of Michigan, coordinated with the
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, to actively experience academic and extracurricular
