SPOTLIGHT
Rising 11th and 12th-grade students from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Shiawassee County and the Upper
Peninsula participated in I2A’s pilot summer program Go for Readiness, Opportunity, and
Empowerment (GROE) with I2A. The program was free-of-charge for students, and included minicourses taught by LSA faculty and staff, an overnight campus visit at the University of Michigan, a
virtual showcase, and the opportunity to opt-in for coaching from I2A Ambassadors throughout the
fall. Students also piloted I2A’s digital tools, ECoach, for tailored messaging, and Lettersmith for
college and job application writing support. After GROE with I2A, all participating 12th-grade students
submitted at least one early action college application, and all were admitted to the University of
Michigan. CEO has been a central partner for implementing GROE with I2A. The two groups consulted
during the brainstorming process, with CEO connecting I2A with schools and students and presenting
during the campus visit, and I2A demonstrating best practices for assessment and training.
