The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) was established 15 years ago as a clear affirmation of U-M’s values and
commitment to diversity in the wake of the Proposal 2 ballot initiative, which ended affirmative action in college
admissions in Michigan. That same year, I began my Ph.D. at U-M. I started working at CEO, both participating in and
observing what it takes to create, establish, and grow a university-wide initiative. CEO valued my experience as a high school
English teacher and college counselor in D.C., especially as CEO launched its very first summer program, the Youth
Leadership Experience. CEO quickly became a space of direct impact and meaningful connection that I deeply appreciated as
a graduate student.
What I loved most about CEO was the family-like feel. The office itself started in a cozy space on Geddes Rd. As a student, I
received mentorship from several CEO team members and even brought my puppy, Monty, to the office. During challenging
times, Dr. William Collins and Dr. Marie Ting gave me the encouragement and guidance I needed to finish my degree and grow
as both a scholar and a professional. I was surprised and delighted when Dr. Robert Sellers asked me to lead CEO in 2018—it
has truly been a dream job. My goal has been to preserve that family-like spirit within a larger, dynamic team while also
securing the resources needed to support more students across Michigan. I want every youth we serve, and every college
student who drives our programs, to know we have their back and are here to guide and encourage them toward their goals.
Today, CEO is as vital—if not more so—than when it was founded. Almost half of Michigan high school graduates did not enroll
in college last year (46.7%). A decade ago, 66% enrolled. The state’s
