ASPIRNAUT SUMMER
RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Aspirnaut Summer Research Internship Program at the University of Michigan strives to expand interest in basic
science research by bringing high school students from under-resourced areas across Michigan—including rural and
socioeconomically disadvantaged communities—to U-M to become immersed in a hands-on science laboratory
experience. High school student interns spend six weeks on U-M's Ann Arbor campus working with a team of
researchers in the life sciences. They conduct their own research project, and gather results that contribute to cuttingedge research. At the end of the experience, Aspirnaut interns present their findings to peers and mentors.
Aspirnaut was founded in 2018
78% of participants were the first in their family to attend college
42 participants were from under-resourced
communities in Michigan, 2 from New Mexico
31 applied to U-M, 24 were admitted, and 15 matriculated,
and 18 matriciulated to other colleges or universities
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
"It has made me mature as an individual and appreciate
everything others do for me. I also learned I am smarter than I
thought and anything can be accomplished if you really try hard.”
