A LETTER FROM
DR. TABBYE
CHAVOUS
Dr. Tabbye M. Chavous is a U-M professor of education and psychology. Her research examines identity
and motivation processes among Black youth and emerging adults, as well as the measurement and
impacts of racial and diversity climates in secondary and postsecondary education. Her scholarship,
supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Spencer Foundation, and Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation, underscores both foundational research and practical applications
through integrity-driven collaborations with schools, youth, families, communities, and organizations.
Dr. Chavous co-founded and co-directed the NSF-funded Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context,
supporting research and training of students, postdocs, and early career scholars on the positive
development of diverse Black youth and families. She has also held multiple leadership roles at U-M,
including vice provost for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer; associate vice president for
research; director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity; associate dean for DEI in the College
of LSA and for academic programs at Rackham Graduate School; and chair of the Combined Program in
Education and Psychology. Across these roles, she has consistently advanced high-quality, inclusive
research and applied equity-focused leadership to transform educational environments.
Beginning August 2025, Dr. Chavous will serve as Executive Director of the American Educational
Research Association.
