Colleges and universities are pivotal in shaping the future workforce, especially in management, technology, and
professional fields. A workforce that reflects all segments of society is essential for achieving the most productive
outcomes. Thus, an economic imperative exists for a highly educated and diverse workforce. The CEO staff's
mission is to create and support educational enrichment activities that address these imperatives.
University outreach efforts should partner with target communities toward mutually beneficial goals. This involves
community members in decision-making about goals, operations, and measures of success. Many of CEO’s most
successful programs, including Camp Kinomaage, the Michigan College Advising Corps, and Wolverine Express,
exemplify this collaborative approach.
AS MEMBERS OF THE CEO
TEAM OR AS ONE OF ITS
PARTNERS, YOUR ROLE IS
TO REACH OUT TO
COMMUNITIES WITHOUT
BROAD ACCESS TO
HIGHER EDUCATION,
INVOLVE COMMUNITY
MEMBERS IN DEFINING
THE STAKES, AND CRAFT
APPROACHES TO
ACHIEVE MUTUALLY
BENEFICIAL GOALS.
On a personal note, an educated population is essential for meeting
future labor force needs and ensuring the efficient functioning of society.
This includes fostering cross-cultural understanding as well as technical
expertise. Colleges and universities are uniquely positioned to address
these concerns.
As members of the CEO team or as one of its partners, your role is to
reach out to communities without broad access to higher education,
involve community members in defining the stakes, and craft approaches
to achieve mutually beneficial goals. Envision the university as a partner,
not a master, and harness its resources to support this effort. With your
continued dedication and commitment, future generations of students
will be well-served and well-positioned to contribute their ideas as part
of a diverse student body at the University of Michigan.
Here's to countless more years of inspiring outreach and transformative
impact!
